BB 3-5 Year Olds Bluebell
The children have had a wonderful week in the Bluebell room! This week, our learning focus was all about Arctic animals. The children engaged beautifully with our Arctic-themed tuff tray, exploring the texture of moon dough and using small-world resources such as penguins, seals, and polar bears to enrich their play. They even discussed where these different animals live, enhancing their understanding and awareness of the world.
In addition, the children have been practicing their mathematics and literacy skills. For numeracy, they involved themselves in numeral recognition from 1 to 6 by rolling a dice, counting the correct number of spots on a fish, and feeding it to the penguin. To learn our ‘sound of the week’ (‘p’), they practiced writing the letter ‘p’ in flour, as well as drawing and finding objects that begin with the ‘p’ sound.
Furthermore, the children took part in making healthy choices regarding food and drink by creating a poster. They found pictures in magazines, cut them out, and identified whether they were healthy or unhealthy. They also drew self-portraits by looking in the mirror and adding details and emotions to their drawings, which led to great discussions about what makes them feel happy, sad, or angry. Our STEM table was another big hit, the children enjoyed experimenting with magnets, making predictions, and testing them out to see how they work.
As the World Cup started this week, the children fully immersed themselves in football! They made a worldwide bunting featuring flags from different countries, which they cut out and threaded onto a string. They also created a paper-plate football craft, colouring it in and decorating it with hexagon-shaped coloured paper.
Out in the garden, the children loved playing in the mud kitchen, exploring various natural materials like flowers, grass, and pinecones to mix their own potions. They also spent time practicing their physical skills using a cricket bat, playing skittles, taking part in an egg-and-spoon race, and balancing bean bags on their heads. Finally, they took part in a ‘snowball’ throwing competition, scrunching up tin foil to make snowballs and aiming at a target, which was fantastic for practicing their hand-eye coordination and gross motor skills.
